As we all know, milk is the lacteal secretion obtained from the mammary gland of the mother, meant for the exclusive nourishment of the new born. The first secretion from the mammary gland is called colostrum which is more nutritious than the subsequent secretion, i.e. the normal milk. Colostrum is rich in immunoglobulins, fat, protein and minerals.
The imunogolbulins protects the new born against possible infection and the excess nutrients gives the kick start needed during the early period of life. The colostrum also acts as a laxative and helps in the excretion of muconeum, the excretory material remaining with in the intestine during the foetus development. Hence, it is highly essential to feed the new born, whether it is a baby or a new born animal, with colostrum as early as possible.
Delay in feeding colostrum to the new born leads to failure in the transfer or absorption of immunoglobulins through the intestine resulting in infection.
