Balance

Arrangement of art element or parts to achieve a harmonious and proportionate arrangement that is pleasing to the eye. Balance can be symmetrical or asymmetrical.

Baroque

Art style prevalent in the late 16th to early 18th centuries characterized by highly ornate and decorative artistic expression. The period influenced sculpture, painting, literature, and music.

Batik

A method of dyeing fabric developed in Indonesia. It involves applying wax to areas of the fabric and dipping the cloth into dye. Wax is them boiled off and the process repeated until desired pattern is achieved.

Bisque

French term for porcelain with a matte or unglazed surface. Also refers to clayware that has been fired but not yet glazed.

Bitmap Image

Most computer images are bitmapped, meaning they are made up of individual colored pixels (one bit of information per pixel). A close examination of these images will reveal jagged edges (see aliasing.

Name used to describe a type of font that displays heavier and darker than a traditional bold version.

Bleed

In graphic design and printing, refers to an ink color or image extending past the trim edge of a page. This occurs when the design of the final printed piece has color or images right up to the edge of the paper. The effect is accomplished by printing the item on a larger sized paper and trimming it to the actual size. Bleeds usually extend at least 1/8” past the actual edge.

Bond

A grade of writing or printing paper where strength, durability and permanence are essential requirements. Used for letterheads, business forms, etc. The basic size is 17"x22".

Book

(Text Paper, Offset Paper) Suitable for offset printing, comes in different finishes, coated or uncoated. More opaque than Bond Paper, good for two sided printing. Basic size is 25” x 38”. 22 lb. – 150lb. Used for books, brochures, annual reports, collateral marketing materials, newsletters, and booklets.

A small roller used to apply ink or varnish. Can be used to ink relief blocks for printmaking or for rolling ink onto paper.

(Bristol board) Heavyweight stock. Used for paperback book covers or catalog covers, file folders, tags, tickets.

Tool consisting of bristles or hairs attached to a handle and generally used for applying paint or ink to surfaces. Available in different shapes and sizes including Flats (F), Brights (B), Rounds (R), Longs (L) and Filberts.

A mostly religious style that references works of art, architecture and history of the Eastern Roman Empire characterized by strong colors and figures.
