British cop show The Bill is not as fast-paced as many American crime or cop dramas, but the plots do provide for a show popular in Britain and abroad.
The series began with a pilot called Woodentop that covered PC Jim Carver (Mark Wingett) starting at Sun Hill police station in London. In over twenty years of crime drama that follows, he and his colleagues face a variety of dangerous situations, encounter numerous deceiving criminals and discover that even fellow colleagues can be criminals.
In the first twenty years sixteen policeman have died, including one suicide, two car bombs and one drowning. Storylines have included the murder of an officer and the criminal deals and activities of DS Don Beech that gave the police station a very bad reputation and the petrol bombing by a fellow colleague that killed six and left many injured.
