Completed Bachelor of the Arts at Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand. In 1972 joined New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation as Christchurch announcer. Spent one American summer working on farm in Southern United States. Spent time as controversial broadcaster in Australia, Britain, Holland, Wales, Austria, and some other European countries. In 1985 began at 2ZB in Wellington as host of late morning radio talkback show, replacing Leighton Smith. In 1988 began at 1ZB in Auckland presenting breakfast show as the Newstalk ZB format was launched overnight on the ZB radio network. In 1989 began presenting the Holmes current affairs television program, causing outrage with non-traditional interview style. Married children's television presenter Hinemoa Elder in 1992, had one child named Reuben, then divorced in 1998. In 2001 released first record. After a Christmas rush to purchase the compact disc, it became the most returned product of the season at The Warehouse discount department stores. In 2003 married Deborah Hamilton and in 2004 he resigned from Television New Zealand for a $3 million three year contract with Nine Network-backed Prime Television.
