Most radio stations are either Earth-based, or they use satellite radio broadcast. In the later case, the advantage is a better quality, and a better range of broadcast.
Radio signals travel in straight lines and that is s why Earth based radio waves cannot usually reach more than 40 miles from the source. At night, some radio stations are clearer, because radio waves reflect into the ionosphere, and due to the absence of the Sun, the ionosphere, at night, has a better reflection capacity.
