The Sound of Music is the final collaboration between Oscar Hammerstein II and Richard Rodgers and is based on Maria Von Trapp's autobiography "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers". Set in 1938, the musical tells the story of Maria Rainer, a free-spirited nun who Captain George Von Trapp hires to care for his seven children. Although Captain Trapp is engaged to marry a wealthy woman, he and Maria fall in love and marry. Trouble starts quickly, however, after the Nazis invade Austria. The Sound of Music eventually became the second longest Broadway musical of the 1950's.
