Overview

Purchasing the rights to a musical production allows groups besides the official companies to perform the musical in front of a paying audience. The performance rights also will, most of the time, allow the performing group to make a profit off of the production. While many musicals do have licensing rights available, not all shows are available for licensing.

When attempting to purchase rights for a musical, you should decide whether you are an "amateur" or "professional" group based on these definitions:

- Amateur groups are considered to be those who do not pay their actors or pay them temporarily. This includes schools, religious groups, and community theaters.

- Professional groups are considered those who employ actors who substantially make their living in the entertainment industry and are paid accordingly.
