Definition

An accent signifies an emphasis on a certain part or parts of the measure. For example, an accent on the downbeat in 3/4 time would make the rhythm feel like "1 - 2 - 3." A jazz tune which might have an accent on beats 2 and 4 in 4/4 time, would look more like this, "1 - 2 - 3 - 4."
