Sitar

The sitar is most popular in India. Famous sitar maestro Ravi Shankar has made this instrument known all over the world.
The instrument has a long neck structure and usually has 17 strings but it may vary. It has 3-4 playing strings and another 3-4 drone strings. There is also a series of sympathetic strings which are almost never played but ad to the sound as they vibrate when the corresponding note is struck. There is a main resonator and there also may be an additional resonator.

The sitar is used in North Indian classical music, film music and western fusion music.

It has said to have developed in India in the Mughal period.
