Death metal grew out of the thrash metal trend of the 1980s. The style combined the hard, fast driving rhythms of speed metal with the dark, morbid obsession with death and despair owing as much to Black Sabbath as it does to Metallica. Death metallers of the late 1980s and early 1990s took a nod from the art-rockers of the 1970s, with loud thunderous riffs, and winding, complex solos and melodies. Although never surging in popularity, Death Metal has always kept a smalll cult of loyal listeners, and remains firmly established in the Heavy Metal scene even today.
