Overview

Black Metal, like Death Metal, grew from the early 1980s Thrash and Speed Metal movement. Venom is credited with coining the phrase 'Black Metal' with their 1982 album of that title. Black Metal can be either very primitive sounding, in the style of Venom, Bathory, and Nargaroth. Or, it can be very complex, with very technical guitar and drum work, in the style of Emperor, Dissection, and Cradle of Filth. The lyrics are usually screamed rather than sung, although often times female vocals are used, especially in more symphonic bands. The subject matter is dark, and usually centers around death, magic, and the occult.
