Big Band

A style of Jazz featuring a large number of musicians (more than 10), incorporating various combinations of horns such as trumpets, trombones, clarinets and saxophones with a “rhythm section” playing various percussion instruments such as piano, guitar, bass and drums. Big band is identified most closely with the swing era of the thirties and forties. During that time, most jazz groups were big bands and played a danceable and lively style of swing. Because of this, big bands and swing are tightly linked together. The big band style offered individual musicians a chance to improvise technical solos within a dance format.
