Intelligent Dance Music - A term used to describe all sub-genres of "intelligent" music. The term "intelligent" reflects the attention demanded of the listener, meaning that this is the music equivalent of reading a book. It can be highly enjoyable, but requires the listener to be highly attentive to truly appreciate the work and engineering that went into the creative process. IDM is characterized by highly complex sound structuring as opposed to complex melodic content. It is not uncommon for an IDM track to change tempo, time signature, or frequency content over a very short period of time. Though one of the least commercialized forms of electronic music, this genre has captured the attention of a considerable percentage of electronic music fans from around the world.
