Sal Abutrusco, having been in the band "Fallout" with Peter Steele and Josh Silver, is said to have been the instigator in the formation of the band. Originally calling themselves Repulsion, SubZero and finally Type O Negative, Sal was the original drummer for the band. He was a member of the band from its inception in 1989 until the first release of Bloody Kisses and the subsequent tour in 1993, leaving to work with Life of Agony in 1994.

Sal left Life of Agony in 1996 on musical hiatus. Once he "freed himself" from some personal issues, he was one of the founding members of Supermassiv in 2001. Accoring to Sal, the band "lots of potential and really good music but internally the band was a mess and could not deal with the inner conflicts of egos and psychosis". He returned to Life of Agony in 2002 with whom he is currently working.
