The Best Director award is given to the nominee who has shown the most outstanding film direction in a feature film.
At the 1928 awards, there were three Director awards given out. The category was divided into Best Director of a Comedy, and Best Director of a Drama. The Comedy award was given to Lewis Milestone for "Two Arabian Knights" and the Drama award went to Frank Borzage for his work on "7th Heaven." Charlie Chaplin was also given special recognition for "The Circus." This practice was dropped after the first ceremony, and from then on, only one award would be given.
