Matthew Reilly was born on July 2nd, 1974 in Sydney.
His parents were entertainers and undoubtedly influenced his interest in creative writing, while books such as 'To Kill a Mockingbird' and 'Lord of the Flies', that he discovered at high school, aroused his interest in reading and he searched out the action novel genre.
His first novel 'Contest' was finished in 1994 at the age of 19 while studying law. 'Contest' was repeatedly rejected by the major publishers based in Sydney and in 1996, Matthew published 1000 copies himself and sold the novel in Sydney. Pan Macmillan's agents in Australia noticed the book and signed Matthew to a contract for 'Ice Station' and another.
His firm is known as Karanadon Entertainment (named after the Karanadon in 'Contest').
In 1997, at 23, he completed the manuscript for 'Ice Station' during his final year of Law. It was published by Pan Macmillan in 1998. He has university degrees in both Arts and Law. 'Ice Station' has been sold to publishers in the US, UK, South Africa, Japan, China, Germany, Holland, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria, among others. Movie rights to 'Ice Station' were optioned to Paramount Pictures in 2002. He released his next novel 'Temple' in 1999 and again this was published in many countries.
Pan Macmillan released an updated version of his first novel 'Contest' in 2000. Contest is of a science fiction nature.
There is fan community with a web site and forum where he writes a monthly "Thoughts" column on the fan site, addressing frequently asked questions. You can find links to them on his site at Fan Site Links .
