John Grisham was born in Jonesboro, Arkansas. He earned his degree in accounting at the Mississippi State University. He later got a law degree at the University of Mississippi. After marrying Renee Jones, starting his law practice in Southaven and being elected into the Mississippi House of Representatives, he wrote his first book A Time to Kill.
