Introduction

Fifteen years ago, a cataclysmic event called the Second Impact derailed the living conditions on Earth, killing half of its population in the process. Now the year is 2015, and mysterious beings called "Angels" are attacking Tokyo-3, the new capital city of Japan.

The series begins as Shinji Ikari, a fourteen-year-old boy, arrives in Tokyo-3 by the order of his father who left him when he was a child. Shinji finds the city evacuated as the first Angel attacks. NERV, a special agency responsible only to the United Nations, is given the task of fighting these creatures. To accomplish this NERV has created Evangelions, large human-like fighting machines.

After certain events, Shinji is taken to the NERV headquarters where he finds out that his father is in fact the commander of NERV, and that he must pilot Eva 01, an Evangelion, and fight the Angel.

The following episodes develop into an adventure that is not limited only to the physical world of a future Japan. The story is rich with intrigue, philosophical themes and action, yet mainly revolves around the protagonist Shinji and his mind.

Neon Genesis Evangelion consists of a 26-episode TV series first aired in late 1995 and early 1996 in Japan and two feature-length films that were released in Japanese theatres in 1997.
